Abstract

This article attempts to explain the phenomenon of language extinction in Indonesia, especially related to the factors that can cause language extinction and its ethnolinguistic implications. Several factors identified as causes of language extinction include the influence of the majority language, the existence of bilingual or multilingual communities, globalization, migration, inter-ethnic marriage, natural disasters, and lack of appreciation for ethnic languages. In addition, language extinction can bring significant ethnolinguistic implications, such as the loss of knowledge about the internal structure of the language and the loss of local knowledge and cultural richness of the community speaking the language. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the challenges faced by regional languages in the modern era and the importance of efforts to preserve regional languages as cultural heritage.
