Abstract
This study aims to analyze the forms of politeness and impoliteness in the comment section of the official TikTok account of the Gerindra Party (@Gerindra). As a space for public communication, social media often gives rise to interactions filled with opinions, criticism, and emotional expressions from netizens. In this context, linguistic strategy plays a crucial role, especially in maintaining ethical and polite political communication. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Geoffrey Leech’s politeness theory as the analytical framework. Data were collected through non-participatory observation of user comments on several political video uploads from the @Gerindra account. The findings indicate that several politeness maxims were applied in the interactions, such as the maxim of agreement, the maxim of sympathy, and the maxim of tact. The responses from the @Gerindra account show linguistic strategies aimed at avoiding conflict, demonstrating empathy, and building a positive image as a political actor open to public dialogue. These findings highlight the importance of applying politeness principles in digital communication, particularly in the political realm of social media which is often prone to polarization and impolite expressions.
