Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of the discussion method on student participation in class XI at SMK Negeri 7 Medan. Student participation is an important indicator of learning success, but based on initial observations, student participation was still relatively low. Therefore, an active learning method is needed to improve student engagement, one of which is the discussion method.
This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were class XI students, while the object of the study was student participation in the learning process. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted descriptively by comparing conditions before and after the implementation of the discussion method.
The results showed that the application of the discussion method had a positive impact on student participation. Students became more active in asking questions, answering, expressing opinions, and collaborating in groups. In addition, the classroom atmosphere became more interactive and conducive to learning.
In conclusion, the discussion method is effective in increasing student participation in learning activities. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to apply this method to improve the quality of learning.
